All About John Mayer

Birth and Early Life of John Mayer:

John Mayer was born October 16, 1977 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Inspired by a Stevie Ray Vaughan tape given to him by his father, Mayer began learning to play the guitar at age 13. After practicing his skills for 2 years, John Mayer began to play live in bars and other venues near his home.

Berklee College of Music and First Recordings:

John Mayer enrolled in the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts at the age of 19. However, he left before completing his studies and moved to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue a career in music. John Mayer became a regular fixture of the Atlanta club circuit and released his first solo album Inside Wants Out, an acoustic set, in 1999.

Room for Squares:

A March, 2000 appearance at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas led to a major label recording contract with Aware, a subsidiary of Columbia. The resulting album, Room for Squares, was released in September, 2001. It eventually climbed to #8 on the album chart and sold over 4 million copies making John Mayer a star. The album includes the top 20 pop hit singles "No Such Thing" and "Your Body Is a Wonderland."

Heavier Things:

John Mayer spent the next 2 years touring, which resulted in the live album Any Given Thursday, and preparing the followup to Room for Squares. In September, 2003, Heavier Things appeared. It included the Grammy Award winning song "Daughters" and the album became Mayer's first to hit #1. Mayer found himself in demand for musical collaborations, and he has worked with artists ranging from Maroon 5 to Rob Thomas and Sheryl Crow.

John Mayer Trio:

In the spring of 2005, John Mayer put together a blues-rock trio called the John Mayer Trio. The group played a number of sold out concerts including a stint opening for the Rolling Stones. A live album Try! was released in November, 2005. At the end of a performance at the Tempe Music Festival in March, 2006, John Mayer indicated that the trio had come to an end.

Continuum:

John Mayer went back to the studio in 2006 to record another solo album. Seeing Continuum as part of a trilogy that includes Room for Squares and Heavier Things, Mayer said "With any trilogy, the third in the series blows it open." The new album was preceded by the top 40 pop hit single "Waiting on the World to Change." Continuum was released September 12, 2006.
